In addition to teaching children and adults, Joan leads the women’s ensemble, Gloria Deo, sings in the Huguenot Road Baptist Church Chancel Choir, and often facilitates study groups. She sang the role of Narrator in HRBC’s 1999 production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. Several other musicals at HRBC, in Springfield, VA and Pensacola, FL enriched Joan’s church music experience.
Joan enjoyed participating in Southern Seminary’s staged production of Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah and playing with The Zoo’s Who, an educational instrumental group, while a student in Louisville, KY and Babes in Toyland while a student in Eau Claire, WI. A highlight of Joan’s college time was singing and traveling with the Albert-Ludwig-Universitaet Bach Chor while studying abroad in Freiburg, Germany. During childhood, college and her young adult years Joan traveled extensively throughout Europe.
Joan is married to church educator Terry L. Maples (BS-Accounting, 5/79 – University of Alabama; MDiv/RE, 5/83 – Southern Seminary). Joan and Terry reared two children – Andrew Kyle (22) who lives in Boulder, CO, and Anna Michele (20), a vocal performance student at VCU. Besides her passion for teaching music,
Joan enjoys mentoring, exercising, nutrition issues and reading.
